Kenya Power (KPLC) reduces the cost of tokens following complaints by consumers over high electricity prices.

Kenyans have benefited from lower power token prices over the past two months as a result of price reductions implemented by Kenya Power in response to numerous complaints from customers over the high cost of electricity across the nation.

According to new prices, for Ksh1,000, consumers are now receiving 37.61 units in the month of September.

This marks an improvement from the previous month of August when the same amount would only fetch 31.15 units.

In addition, power users in September are now granted 3.76 units for every Ksh100 spent, as opposed to 3.67 units in August and 3.59 units in July.

The recent reduction in token prices coincides with a claim made by Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror that electricity presently stands as the most affordable energy source in Kenya.

Given that Kenya Power had proposed new rates in April, initially sparking concerns among Kenyans that costs may increase by as much as 78%, this decrease in token pricing is noteworthy.

Kenya Power stated during discussions with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) that it intended to eliminate subsidies meant to protect low-income households.

This was the first time the power transmission business had increased power tariffs since  2018.

President William Ruto promised Kenyans at the time that the elimination of subsidies would not result in an increase in token prices.

“ I want to assure the country that there will be no additional charges today or going into the future on electricity bills to the people of Kenya,” the President stated.

Kenya Power on August 8, denied media reports that it has been inflating electricity bills by up to 20 percent explaining that the narrative was geared towards building a false narrative around the cost of electricity and tarnishing the brand.
