Kenya Red Cross has issued an update on the rescue mission after a boat full of people capsized in Tana River.
In their report, the Kenya Red Cross noted that they managed to rescue 23 people and rushed them to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.
The boat was ferrying people at a fee across the flooded section of the Madogo- Garissa road when it capsized in full glare of cameras.
“23 people have been rescued and are currently receiving care at Madogo Hospital, while others are still missing,” the Kenya Red Cross announced.
The exact number of people on the ill-fated boat is still unknown but the rescue operation is still in place to try and find the rest of the people.
“A boat carrying a large number of people has capsized at Kona Punda while heading to Mororo. Our teams from Garissa and Tana River County are currently responding to the situation,” Kenya Red Cross had earlier announced.

From videos shared online, the boat was sailing across the swollen Tana River and could be seen being swept by the raging waters before it capsized.
Residents waiting by the roadside to be ferried watched helplessly as the boat capsized.
Some of the passengers in the boat tried to swim in the raging floods, with water overwhelming them.
Preliminary reports indicate that the boat had more than 40 people and most of them were students and teachers.
However, the local authorities have yet to corroborate the reports.
