The National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday refuted claims that some of the police officers deployed to Haiti were dead.
NPS, through its social media channels, denounced a clip that had made rounds on social media platforms, especially TikTok, insinuating that seven of the officers had been overpowered and killed by the gangs.
The clip featured several police officers on the streets who appeared not to be in Haiti.
The reports had emerged barely a week after President William Ruto flagged off the first batch of 400 police officers who flew to Haiti to help restore peace and lead a United Nations-backed peacekeeping mission.
At the time, the Head of State explained that he had faith in the team and noted that the country possesses solid credentials in peace-making and conflict resolution globally.
Upon arrival, however, the officers faced resistance, especially by the gang led by Jimmy Cherizier, alias Barbecue, who had initially sought talks with Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille.
When the talks failed, Barbecue vowed to fight the Kenya police officers to death and directed his gang members to open fire at the authorities.
In a clip that shortly after went viral, the gang leader termed the Kenyan police as invaders and said he was ready to die for the liberation of the Carribean nation.

“I don’t care if they are white or black. If they’re not Haitian and they’re on Haitian soil, they’re invaders,” Barbecue stated.
“It’s a bloodbath, It’s a fight for the country, and I will fight for it even if I die I am sure there will be successors and there will be other people who will continue with this fight,” he earlier revealed in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Acting PM, Conille, however, maintained that talks with the gang leader could only be entertained if the latter stopped engaging in illegal activities.
President Ruto, however, insisted that the Kenya police will work with the international community to ensure peace is restored in Kenya. The operation is expected to give relief to Haiti citizens who have been under gang attacks for close to a year now.
