Key suspect in the murder of Machakos University student prospect arrested
DCI detectives have arrested the prime suspect linked to the brutal killing of 19-year-old Faith Kemunto, who went missing while preparing to join Machakos University.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the prime suspect linked to the brutal killing of 19-year-old Faith Kemunto, who went missing while preparing to join Machakos University.
In a statement on Saturday, September 6, DCI said Kemunto had travelled home from Nairobi in readiness for her admission and meeting her boyfriend.
“Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Faith Kemunto, a young lady who was set to join Machakos University before her disappearance and tragic death in July 2025.
“According to investigators, Faith had travelled home from Nairobi on July 27, 2025, in preparation for her university admission. On the fateful day, she left home to meet her boyfriend, Gidion Angisa — but she was never seen alive again,” the statement read.
Kemunto’s sudden disappearance sparked concern within her family, who reported the matter at Nyamuri Police Station when she failed to return home.
Despite frantic efforts by both relatives and local authorities, there was no trace of either Kemunto or Angisa.
Detectives eventually traced Angisa to Nairobi, where he had gone into hiding.
“Her disappearance prompted her family to report the matter at Nyamuri Police Station. Despite initial efforts, the search for Faith and Gidion yielded no positive results.
“Subsequent investigations revealed that Gidion had fled to Huruma estate in Nairobi, where he had been holed up before being smoked out by the detectives,” the statement added.
Following Angisa’s arrest, authorities later recovered a body believed to be that of Kemunto, buried in a shallow grave along a roadside.
“Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of Faith’s mobile phone. He was escorted to Nyamira and is currently being held at Ekerenyo Police Station.
“A body believed to be that of Faith Kemunto was later recovered buried in a shallow grave by the roadside and was exhumed after an exhumation order was issued by the Nyamira Law Courts,” the statement further read.
Detectives have since been granted a 21-day custodial order as investigations continue.
This comes months after police Officers arrested 17-year-old Lizz Njeri Mwangi in connection with the horrific murder of a 3-year-old.

In a statement on Monday, June 23, DCI said Lizz is the prime suspect in the murder of Margaret Wanjiru Kirathe that unfolded in Menengai, Nakuru County.
According to DCI, the child was found unconscious approximately 50 meters from PCEA Shalom Mchanganyiko Church.
The child was rushed to Kenlands Hospital; however, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“Officers received a disturbing report about a young child found unconscious approximately 50 meters from PCEA Shalom Mchanganyiko Church. Unfortunately, despite swift action, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kenlands Hospital,” the statement read.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect reportedly lured little Margaret away from the church, leading her to a secluded place, where she strangled her using a piece of cloth.
The motive of the murder of the 3-year-old child is, however, yet to be established.
Police officers, acting on intelligence, launched an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect at her residence in Judea Village, Menengai Sub-Location, within Kiamaina Ward.
Officers recovered the clothes Lizz wore while committing the offence, as captured on CCTV, as well as the piece of cloth used to commit the heinous act.
