The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced the dates for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) qualifying tests for learners from foreign education systems.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 20, the agency said the tests are scheduled to take place from June 9th to 11th, 2025.
According to KNEC, the qualifying test is designed for candidates who are joining the Kenyan education system from other countries or from alternative education systems within Kenya.
It assesses the learners’ readiness to transition into the Kenyan curriculum and ensures that they are placed at the appropriate level.
“A qualifying test is an assessment administered to candidates joining the Kenyan education system from other countries or other education systems in the country,” KNEC explained.
The examination body confirmed that all candidates expected to sit the 2025 KJSEA qualifying test have already been contacted and given the necessary instructions.
Additionally, following the administration and marking of the qualifying test, successful learners will be eligible to register for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

“The candidates sitting the 2025 KJSEA qualifying test have already been contacted. After the qualifying test is administered and marked, the learners will then be able to register for KJSEA,” KNEC further said.
KJSEA was introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to evaluate learners completing Grade 9 in junior secondary school.
Replacing the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), it comprises school-based assessments conducted in Grades 7 and 8, accounting for 20% of the final score.
Post-KJSEA, students are placed into senior secondary schools based on their cumulative performance and expressed interests.
The 2025 KJSEA is scheduled from October 27 to November 5, with project-based assessments for Creative Arts & Sports and Pre-Technical Studies occurring between May and July.
