William Sigilai, KNH CEO, while addressing the media on Wednesday, June 18, stated that the vendor was in a better condition than when he was admitted.
However, he had not yet woken up and was still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“The CT scan of the head confirmed that a bullet had struck the left side of his head. The patient was then prepared for emergency surgery to mitigate his condition,” he announced.
“The patient was wheeled into theatre where a complex and delicate surgery was conducted by a multidisciplinary team under the leadership of our neurosurgeon. The procedure lasted 2 hours. During the procedure, an object believed to be a bullet was removed.”
According to the doctor, Kariuki suffered a head injury as the bullet was found in his skull. It was established that there was some damage to his brain.

Preliminary reports by the hospital show that the vendor was most likely hit by a rubber bullet.
“While his condition is critically ill, he is alive and under close round-the-clock observation by our medical team,” the CEO stated.
Sigilai added that the hospital was yet to establish his exact name, adding that they were working with the family to confirm the identity, as required by the hospital policy.
Meanwhile, the KNH detailed that it has received 16 patients after the Tuesday demonstrations, with some of the patients having bullet wounds.
“The injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma. Of these, 7 patients were admitted for further management, 9 were treated and discharged, 2 have undergone surgery, and 4 more are scheduled for surgical procedures today,” read the statement in part.
“One other patient remains unidentified, having sustained a skull fracture reportedly from an assault.
