KRA introduces mandatory fuel station system for all petroleum products retailers
Petrol stations across Kenya will begin using a mandatory electronic fuel station system, which will enable real-time invoicing.
According to a statement on June 27, the Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA) stated that the rollout of its Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) for petrol stations across the country will enable the real-time seamless invoicing for every sale.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is implementing the eTIMS Fuel Station System, which is an eTIMS solution for the fuel sector that enables real-time seamless invoicing for every sale, integrating with KRA through a forecourt controller and existing point of sale,” the statement reads in part.
The authority informed petroleum product retailers of the mandatory requirements to implement the eTIMS fuel station system across all their outlets by June 30, 2025.
Those with sufficient in-house technical expertise can choose to self-integrate, while others are urged to engage KRA-certified fuel solution integrators.
KRA also clarified to fuel station owners that the updated list of approved third-party integrators per solution is published on the KRA website under the ‘Publications’ page.
The authority added that it will continue to support and facilitate all taxpayers to comply with electronic tax invoicing requirements.

The launch of the system came after a phased introduction starting in June 2024, including voluntary pilot implementations and stakeholder consultations with an aim of tailoring the technology of fuel retailing.
KRA revealed that as of April 2025, the five third-party integrators had already been certified, and many stations were in various stages of onboarding.
The authority explains that eTIMS offers major benefits such as faster service at pumps, improved tax compliance, automatic VAT record‑keeping, and reduced errors .
An eTIMS system supports multiple payment options, such as mobile money and cards, ensuring transaction accuracy and reconciliation.
According to the KRA, the system is compatible with loyalty programs and offline backups, making operations easy when there a connectivity problems.
