KRA issues ultimatum to Kenyans over unpaid principal taxes

Kenyans who owe main taxes have been given a two-month ultimatum by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)

Kenyans who owe principal taxes have been given a two-month ultimatum by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

To regularize their tax compliance status, taxpayers are encouraged by KRA to take advantage of the ongoing Tax Amnesty Programme, according to a statement released on Thursday, April 25.

“The Authority urges Kenyans who have not been filing their returns to do so before 30th June 2024 and those that have not been paying and have accrued penalties and interest on their unpaid principal taxes to take advantage of the amnesty and clear any outstanding principal tax debts by 30th June 2024,” read the statement in part.

KRA stated that after the ultimatum expires on June 30, 2024, there will be no write-offs of penalties and interests, waivers, or amnesty.

The Authority emphasized that import and customs charges, interest, and penalties accumulated after December 30, 2022 are not covered by the Tax Amnesty scheme.

Simultaneously, KRA said that it had collected Ksh 20.8 billion in past-due principal taxes, of which Ksh 28.7 billion had been self-reported as unpaid taxes.

“Taxpayers who had defaulted on filing and paying their taxes have so far benefited from Ksh 244.7 billion in waiver of penalties and interests. KRA encourages more taxpayers to take advantage of the programme,” KRA added.

With full payment of their respective primary taxes by June 30, 2024, taxpayers will be eligible for amnesty on penalties and interest collected for periods up to December 31, 2022, according to the Tax Amnesty Program, which was created in the Finance Act, 2023.

With the goal of improving compliance and revenue mobilization, the initiative allows taxpayers who are involved in tax disputes to take advantage of the Alternative Tax Dispute Resolution system that is currently in place.
