KUCCPS opens application portal for placement to Open University of Kenya; REQUIREMENTS

KUCCPS has opened applications for admission to the Open University of Kenya accredited on August 3

KUCCPS has opened applications for admission to the Open University of Kenya accredited on August 3.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) Chief Executive Officer Agnes Mercy Wahome said the applications will be free of charge and without any deadline.

“This is due to the uniqueness of the Open University’s mode of learning and flexible modular programme design that will allow students to study at their own pace and convenience,” said Wahome.

According to admission guidelines provided by the university, for the first time in Kenyan history, work experience, short courses, or acknowledgement of past learning would be taken into account when admitting students to pursue degree programs.

The institution aims to remove traditional obstacles and give more Kenyans the chance to enroll in university programs in a flexible and convenient way.

President William Ruto launched the Open University of Kenya (OUK) on August 3, 2023 to help Kenyans who missed early opportunities or encountered obstacles like official grades, age, financial capability, gender, or geographic location to obtain higher education.

Prof. Elijah Omwenga, vice chancellor of the institution, has asked the placement body to publish two postgraduate diploma courses and five degree programs on the student placement application portal.

A portfolio for the acknowledgment of prior learning and proof of a KCSE certificate or similar are the minimum admission criteria for undergraduate studies.

The university will provide undergraduate degrees in fields including data science, cyber security, and digital forensics, as well as technology education, business, and entrepreneurship. It will also offer degrees in economics and statistics.

The postgraduate programmes will include flagship Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability and Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Design and Technology.

The degree and postgraduate diploma programmes have between 12 and 14 course units per academic year.

Learning will take one year for postgraduate programmes while the bachelor’s degree programmes will take four years to complete.
