Last warning Migori lorry driver sent before the accident- eyewitnesses

Migori lorry driver sent a signal to residents before the accident, but they ignored leading to the crash that left nine people dead

Migori lorry driver sent a signal to residents before the accident, but they ignored leading to the crash that left nine people dead.

Nine people have so far died while seven others sustained serious injuries following a fatal road crash in Migori town on Saturday morning April 8.

The accident occurred after a truck ferrying rice lost control and ploughed into pedestrians and several vehicles along the Migori-Isebania road.

Following the Migori accident, eyewitnesses revealed that the lorry driver sent a signal to residents, but they ignored leading to the crash that left nine people dead.

According to Migori County Commander Mark Wanjala six people died on the spot while the others died at the Migori County Referral Hospital.

According to witnesses, moments before the crash the truck driver made efforts to alert pedestrians to give way and flashed his headlights while hooting and shouting repeatedly as he struggled to control the truck.

It, however, crashed near a boda boda shade on the Migori-Isibiania road, Migori County.

“The lorry hooted from afar, forcing two people at the bridge to jump in the nearby river as it scared them,” one eyewitness recalled.

“It then proceeded to crash into a boda boda shade hurting and killing others,” he added.

Another eyewitness indicated that the section of the road was unclear, as some drivers had parked and left their vehicles, affecting moveability.

Another resident indicated that boda boda riders had also invaded sections of the road, turning them into parking bays.

He added that even traders had occupied road sections affecting traffic flow.

Residents called on Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to deploy police officers to control traffic on that section of the road.

They also implored the CS and Migori County Governments to allocate proper parking bays for cars and boda-boda riders.

“We just plead with the government to remove vehicles which are parking here and blocking the road,” the witness stated.

“Kindly clear this section of the road and even allocate proper parking spaces for boda boda riders,” he added.

“I offer my deepest sympathies to all those who have lost their loved ones, friends, and colleagues in the tragic accident that occurred this morning at the bodaboda stage in Migori town,” he wrote on his social media platforms.

“May God grant you all fortitude to get through this difficult moment.”

Kanu Chairperson Gideon Moi also took to his social media accounts to send his condolences.

“Please accept my deepest condolences. We stand with you in mourning the loss of these innocent lives,” he wrote.

Moi urged motorists to be careful on the road while calling on authorities to equally escalate inspections and institute other traffic safety measures to avoid loss of lives.
