The Democracy for the Citizens Party launch slated for Tuesday, June 3, at Kasarani Stadium has been cancelled.

In a statement on Monday, June 2, former KICC board chair Irungu Nyakera announced that this new development was a result of being denied a venue for the event.

However, he revealed that new dates and a venue would be communicated in due time and that the slight setback would not break their resolve.

“The DCP party launch that was to be held on Thika Road has been called off, awaiting a new venue and date,” Nyakera stated.

“But let it be known that you can deny us a venue, but you cannot deny us our voice. We will rise.”

The party leader and former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, had earlier announced that the launch party would be held at Kasarani Stadium in a booking letter for the stadium’s gymnasium.

The party sought to reserve the facility for a hefty Ksh3.7 million to be used for speeches, performances, and interactive sessions aimed at unveiling the party’s vision, manifesto, and leadership to the Kenyan public.

The letter further mentioned that around 5,000 people were expected to be present at the event.

“I am writing to formally request to book the Kasarani Stadium Gymnasium for our official party launch event, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 8am to 5pm,” the letter read in part.

“The event is expected to host approximately 5,000 attendees, including party members, supporters, invited guests, and press members.”

However, just a few days later, on May 28, the former DP was barred from using the venue by the Sports Kenya Director-General, Gabriel Komora, who cited the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025.

“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams. We are also not taking further bookings due to preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN),” Komora wrote.

“Kindly consider looking for an alternative venue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we take this opportunity to thank you for your request to utilise the facility.”

This was despite Sports Kenya informing the party that the venue was available on May 21, and the management of the sports complex even approving their booking of the venue for the party launch.

DCP further claimed they had even paid for the venue and received an invoice. It, however, blamed President William Ruto for intervening with its plans.
