Lawyer Nelson Havi Responds to being labeled ‘Ruto’s mole’

Lawyer Nelson Havi has broken his silence after being labeled President William Ruto’s mole.

Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has broken his silence on criticism over his perceived political allegiance to President William Ruto.

In a statement on Monday, April 21, Havi dismissed claims that he is acting as an agent for the president, making it clear that he is unbothered by the labels being thrown his way.

“For the record, I do not care if you label me a William Ruto mole or agent. Two things. First, I am not. Second, in my class in the Society, I can survive in any Government: good or bad. It is you who will die of hunger and disease in a bad Government. The choice is yours,” he said.

Havi, who contested for the Westlands parliamentary seat in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, has often been seen as aligning with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

However, he recently switched camps and endorsed former Chief Justice David Maraga for president in the 2027 General Elections.

In an interview on Thursday, February 11, Havi said he would not be renewing his political allegiance with Ruto as their “contract” comes to an end after five years.

He went on to endorse Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021, for the country’s top seat.

“My contract with William Ruto was for five years, and as the five years come to an end, I do not propose to renew it. I have said we need to have David Maraga as the next President of the Republic of Kenya, and I say this forthrightly, and nobody will fault me, nobody has insurance on me, they know it. I speak the truth and for the good of the people of Kenya. Let us do the right thing,” he said.

Havi has also dismissed claims that Maraga is a weak candidate, stating, “David Maraga is not, and cannot possibly, be a weak candidate for President. It is you, the Kenyan voter who must discard your decisional weakness and gain the strength of a deliberative voter. You must be informed, register to vote and elect David Maraga as President.”
