Legendary marathon record holder, Henry Rono is dead days after Kelvin Kiptum’s death.
Athletics Kenya (AK) has announced the death of legendary marathoner, Henry Rono days after the demise of the late world record holder, Kelvin Kiptum.
In a statement on Thursday, February 15, Athletics Kenya said the former athlete died at 10.30 am while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi South Hospital.
“Athletics Kenya is saddened to announce and notify the public of the demise of former Athlete Mr. Henry Rono which occurred today at 10.30 am. He had been hospitalized at the Nairobi South Hospital for the past 10 days,” read the statement in part.
The athlete who was aged 72, passed away at a hospital in Nairobi where he had been receiving treatment.

The late Rono was a Kenyan retired track and field athlete who specialized in various long-distance running events.
He is remembered as the former record holder for the 3000 meters steeplechase for over a decade. Rono also set the world record for the 5000 meters twice, in 1978 and in 1981.
“On behalf of the Athletics Kenya Executive Committee and athletics fraternity, we wish to convey our sincere heartfelt condolence to his family, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity during this trying moment. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Athletics Kenya added.
Rono’s death comes days after Marathon World record holder Kelvin Kiptum died in a gruesome road accident in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine Road.
