LSK President Faith Odhiambo calls out police for visiting lawyer's homes at night

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has lamented over the intimidation of lawyers by police officers.

In a statement dated Wednesday, May 28, she revealed that there was an increasing trend where police officers were visiting the homes of lawyers at night.

She expressed that the trend was worrying, adding that the trend was an old tactic being used to harass the lawyers and the clients whom they represent.

Faith noted that the police were contravening the constitution, further advising the officers to comply with the law.

“A worrying trend has manifested of the intimidation of lawyers as part of a scheme to harass their clients. This is an old trick in the book against liberties, and it has no place in Kenya,” read the statement in part.

“The police must not cross that indelible line the constitution places in defence of justice and the rule of law. Let us not turn back the clock by unlawful orders or uninformed zeal.”

The LSK President noted that the police only needed to summon the lawyers if they had any issues they were investigating.

“It is unacceptable for police to show up at lawyers’ residences at night when the lawyers can be summoned to record statements through the proper, formal channels, if need be.

“This emerging habit must stop,” the LSK president added.

However, Faith did not detail the lawyers who had been harassed by the officers.

Police are yet to respond to the claims made by the LSK President.
