Maguire confirmed as Manchester United captain for next season after new manager Erik ten Hag’s decision.
New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has made a decision on the captaincy.
Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Harry Maguire will remain as Manchester United captain for next season and doesn’t see retaining the skipper as an issue.
Maguire was under pressure for his place in the side last season, during a disappointing campaign last season.
He faced more competition for his place and there had been speculation that Ten Hag might appoint a new captain.
However, But Ten Hag has given his backing to Maguire to retain the armband this season.
“Harry Maguire is the captain. I have to get to know all the players, but he’s an established captain and he’s achieved a lot of success. I don’t see this as an issue,” he said.
Maguire will play some part against Liverpool in United’s first pre-season friendly against Liverpool in Bangkok.
Ten Hag said he is looking forward to seeing how his side gets on against a familiar foe.
“Playing against Liverpool is always exciting, it’s a big game, we are looking forward and it’s a really good test for us,” he said.
“The standard of Manchester United is to win every game so we will start with that in mind and be determined and we are happy to play this game in Bangkok for many, many fans.
“We just started [training], some players only one week, now we have to construct a team and a way of playing, we are really short in pre-season but of course, we have to develop a lot more.”
