Maina Njenga supporters cause panic after a march on Jogoo Road

A group of individuals, whom police identified as supporters of politician Maina Njenga, caused panic as they marched on Jogoo Road in Nairobi on Wednesday morning.

The group was peaceful as they walked from Makadara Law Courts to the city centre, police and witnesses said.

They had attended a mention of a case that Njenga had at the court before leaving in a group of about 100.

Police monitored the movement from the court to the city centre, where the group dispersed.

The drama came in the wake of ongoing protests in parts of the country over, among others, police brutality.

Witnesses mistook them for protesters. The images of the group were shared online, causing more panic.

Police said, “there was nothing to worry about on the march”.

Njenga was in 2023 charged with possession of crude weapons during the anti-tax protests period in Kenya.

According to the prosecution, Njenga and his co-accused had the intent to commit a felony given the items found in their possession.

The prosecution said that during their arrest, they were found in possession of 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three jembe sticks.

The case had come for hearing, which saw the supporters arrive there in time ahead of the event.
