Majority of journalists feel safer covering Raila’s political events than DP Ruto’s – Media Council Report

Majority of journalists feel safer while covering Raila’s political events than DP Ruto’s according to the Media Council findings.

According to data collected by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), a majority of journalists feel safer and more comfortable covering political rallies of the Azimio coalition led by Raila Odinga compared to the Kenya Kwanza coalition led by DP William Ruto.

The report shows that 49 percent of journalists are more comfortable covering Azimio rallies, 31 percent Kenya Kwanza rallies while 17 percent feel safer covering Roots Party led by Prof. George Wajackoyah.

The Media Council of Kenya data was collected from the first week of July 2022.

The discomfort among the journalists has been attributed to the “frequent removal of journalist from Ruto’s functions.”

“In addition, Ruto has publicly threatened to boycott the upcoming presidential debate organized by the Media Owner’s Association, the Kenya Editors Guild, and the Media Council of Kenya,” said MCK in a statement.

“UDA’s senior communications team also boycotted a meeting convened by the Media Council to forge a working Promoting Media Freedom and Responsible Journalism relationship with pollsters, editors, and political party communications teams in June, opting to send junior staff.”

The media council has also accused some DP Ruto supporters of conducting online hate campaigns against reputable media organizations, including using derogatory names to describe particular journalists.
