Makerere emerges top ahead of the University of Nairobi in top 100 Ranking in Africa

Makerere University in Uganda beats reputable institutions in Kenya including the University of Nairobi, according to the 2023 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities

Makerere University in Uganda beats reputable institutions in Kenya including the University of Nairobi, according to the 2023 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

The University of Nairobi was ranked at number 14 in Africa, while Makerere University was put at position 13 overall.

Kenyatta University (ranked number 54), Egerton University (ranked number 73), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (ranked number 78), and Moi University were among the other top 100 institutions in Kenya (79).

At the top of the ranking in Africa was South Africa’s University of Cape Town.

UoN was placed at position 1064 globally, followed by KU at position 2,047, Egerton University at position 2,334, JKUAT at position 2,470, and Moi University at position 2,470.

From the ranking, South Africa and Egypt scooped the top 12 positions with Makerere Univerity at position 13.

The Webometrics survey evaluated 11,993 universities worldwide based on their excellence, openness, and impact.

Furthermore, one of the main objectives of the list was to promote academic web presence and support the Open Access initiatives for increasing the significant transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by the universities to society.

The United Kingdom and the United States dominated the top ten universities globally with the University of Toronto in Canada emerging at position 16.

The research was conducted by Consejo Superior De Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.

“This ranking started in 2004 with the aim of offering full coverage of Higher Education institutions whatever the country or discipline involve,” the organizers stated.
