A man has died by suicide by hanging himself inside police cells at Katito Police Station in Nyakach Sub-County, Kisumu County.

The incident is said to have happened Friday morning and was reported by officers on duty.

According to a police signal, the officers heard a commotion from the cells, prompting them to respond.

Upon checking, the officers discovered the man had hanged himself using a vest tied to the grill of the cell door.

Police said the deceased had been arrested by the area chief for the offence of stock and brought to the station.

He was booked under OB 09/13/06/2025 at 9:00am for the offence of stock theft.

Efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful, as he had already succumbed.

Detectives from the DCI Nyakach, Muhoroni and CSI officers from Kisumu visited and processed the scene.

The body of the deceased has been preserved awaiting a follow-up investigation by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).

The incident comes barely a few days after another suspect was found dead after a suspected suicide mission at the Ukwala police cells, Siaya County.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning.

The body of Joseph Otieno Oduor alias Sande, 26, was found hanging on a metal rod in the cells’ toilet, police said.

He had been arrested following the issuance of a warrant by a court in the area.

He had been accused of defilement.

Police said he hanged himself in a toilet at the cells using his own shirt.

Police said the body was found hanging on a metal water pipe with his shirt around his neck.

The family said the man was suicidal, as he had attempted the same in the past.

Senior police visited the scene as part of the probe into the incident.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

This comes in the wake of the death of teacher Albert Ojwang at the Central police station cells.
