Manchester United are in ‘disarray’ and Ten Hag faces ‘the hardest job of his life’ Paul Merson claims
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is facing ‘the hardest job of his life’ at Old Trafford this season, Paul Merson has claimed.
After beginning preseason this week, Merson feels Ten Hag will never face a challenge as severe as the one he is about to take on and forewarned him that his team will be dealing with a serious confidence problem.
‘If Ten Hag managed for the rest of his life, it’ll never be harder than what he’s taking on now,’ Merson told Sky Sports.
‘This is a massive job. It’s the biggest club in the world and he is taking over when they’re in disarray.
‘He needs to bring in as many players as he can because this team is not going to get you in the top four. They need to bring certain players in – (Frenkie) De Jong at Barcelona, he’s a good footballer – and then you move on from there.
‘They need at least three or four players just to make a challenge for fourth place.’
United are hoping to make their first big signing of the summer this week with the acquisition of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Sportsmail reported on Monday night that the club were edging closer to concluding a deal for De Jong after initially seeing a £60million bid turned down by the Catalan outfit.
United have also been linked with a move for Ajax’s forward Antony and their highly-rated center-back Lisandro Martinez.
The 24-year-old would be open to the opportunity to play in the Premier League and would be determined to take his chance if the clubs can agree on a fee.
