Manchester United responds to claims they’re forcing de Jong transfer

Manchester United responds to claims they’re forcing Frankie de Jong transfer from Barcelona.

According to sources, Manchester United have reiterated that they won’t be pursuing Frenkie de Jong unless they were certain that he is not willing to head to Old Trafford.

Manchester United instantly identified the 25-year-old as their top summer transfer target and he’s Erik ten Hag’s main target.

The move hasn’t happened yet, despite the fact that the two teams have agreed on a fee.

The two clubs have now agreed on a fee for De Jong, with the Red Devils prepared to pay an initial £63million.

There have been claims over in Catalonia, though, that De Jong is flatly refusing to leave the Nou Camp for Old Trafford.

But United have now reportedly told The Sun that they wouldn’t be wasting their time on a player if there was ‘any doubt over his commitment to making the move’.

And it’s stated the big delay to the transfer is down to the unpaid wages the former Ajax star is owed.

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, De Jong took a pay cut – agreeing for his wages to be deferred.

Barcelona now owes De Jong a huge £17m – but that hasn’t stopped them from splashing the cash as they plan for a brighter future under Xavi.

Despite negotiations, Frenkie de Jong has been included as part of the Barcelona squad for their pre-season tour of the US.

Barcelona have taken a 28-man squad to their tour of the States, which includes new signings Raphinha, Franck Kessie, and Andreas Christensen.
