Marijuana policy still on the table; Wajackoyah on 2027 presidency
Roots Party of Kenya leader Prof. George Wajackoyah has announced he will commence his 2027 presidential campaign after observing a six-month mourning period for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Ramogi TV’s mid-morning show “Mbaka Oromo” on Monday, the politician reflected on his relationship with the fallen opposition leader and outlined his political plans for the upcoming General Election.
“I will start my presidential campaign after my six months of mourning Baba Raila Amolo Odinga,” Wajackoyah declared, paying tribute to the veteran politician who passed away in October 2025.
The Roots Party leader acknowledged the profound influence Raila had on his political journey. “I learnt a lot from the late Raila Odinga,” he said, reflecting on the legacy of the man who shaped Kenya’s modern political landscape for over four decades.
Wajackoyah also addressed his decision to stay out of the broad-based government that emerged from the political pact between Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement and President William Ruto’s administration.
“When everyone was getting into the broad-based government, I told Baba that I will not board the train and he respected that,” he explained, highlighting the mutual respect between the two leaders despite their different political paths.

The professor further distanced himself from the current opposition coalition, explaining his reluctance to align with those calling themselves the United Opposition.
“The reason I do not move around with those who call themselves United Opposition, is that what they are discussing is not valuable to Kenya, I cannot be talking about Ruto every time. It is Ruto against my policies. He is my competitor,” he stated, emphasizing his focus on policy over personality-driven politics.
With characteristic confidence, Wajackoyah asserted his relevance in the 2027 presidential race.
“As I sit here, I am the one Ruto knows will be vying in the next election,” he said, positioning himself as a serious contender for the presidency.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, the professor reaffirmed his commitment to one of his most controversial policy positions.
“I support the use of marijuana that is used for medicinal value and any other commercial use. I will still use it in my manifesto come 2027,” Wajackoyah stated, maintaining the stance that became his signature campaign issue in the 2022 presidential race.
