Mashujaa Day celebrations turn tragic as four die following a early morning stampede at the Kericho Green Stadium.

Four women died in a stampede at Kericho Stadium Friday as a crowd scrambled to get in for the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The incident occurred early morning at gate “C” when a crowd panicked after an accidental spill of hot tea from a hawker, which they mistook for teargas.

Police in Kericho on Friday confirmed that four people died following an early morning stampede at the venue of the 60th Mashujaa Day celebrations, the Kericho Green Stadium.

The four who died at Kericho Referral Hospital were among several people, including a minor, who were rushed to the facility following a stampede at Gate C of the stadium.

“At about 6am on Friday morning, it was reported by police officers on duty at Kericho Green Stadium, the venue of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, that there was a stampede caused by a lady selling tea outside the stadium who accidentally spilled hot tea into the fire near Gate ‘C’ along the public road, causing members of the public to panic and mistake it for tear gas being thrown at them,” reads a police report.

“Several people who tried to enter the stadium were injured and rushed to Kericho County Referral Hospital by county government ambulances. Four unidentified women were confirmed dead at the hospital,” the report added.

A nurse at the facility revealed that the 13 are in a stable condition and are being treated at the county referral hospital.

“Unfortunately, we lost the four who sustained serious injuries during the stampede. However, the 13 are in a stable condition and responding well to treatment,” the nurse said.

Also injured were two Community Health Promoters one with a neck injury and the other with injuries on the back and left leg, police said.

Among the injured were three police officers, with one sustaining a fracture on the right leg, another having a cut wound on the right eye, and the third officer suffering a head injury.

The bodies have been taken to the morgue for identification and post-mortem.
