Mbale Boys High School has been closed indefinitely following a violent student riot on Sunday, May 25.
The chaos erupted after students were denied permission to watch football matches, sparking a night of unrest that left property vandalized and several students injured.
The disturbance saw students go on a rampage, vandalizing school facilities, including dormitories, food stores, and the Deputy Principal’s office.
Police officers from Kilingili, Chavakali, and Mbale police stations were called in to contain the situation, restoring order and preventing further escalation.
Sabatia Member of Parliament Clement Sloya condemned the incident, calling it a blatant act of indiscipline and violence.
“I wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the recent riot at Mbale Boys High School, which resulted in chaos, destruction, and injuries. Such acts of indiscipline and violence have no place in our learning institutions and must be denounced by all stakeholders in the education sector.
“Schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning, growth, and character development, not grounds for lawlessness and unrest,” he said.
In the wake of the unrest, the lawmaker announced immediate measures to investigate the root causes of the incident.
“Following the incident, I have ordered a thorough and independent investigation to be carried out immediately to ascertain the root cause of the unrest. It is important that we uncover the truth, hold those responsible accountable, and take corrective action to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“While disciplinary measures will be taken, we must also be open to understanding any legitimate concerns that may have fueled this unfortunate event,” he continued.
Sloya also commended the police response, acknowledging their role in swiftly managing the situation.

“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely commend the swift and professional response by officers from Kilingili, Chavakali, and Mbale police stations. Upon reaching out to them, they moved quickly to contain the situation and restore calm and order within the school.
“Their coordination and commitment to protecting lives and property are greatly appreciated and serve as an example of effective community policing,” he added.
At least 11 students were injured during the skirmishes and were rushed to Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH) for treatment.
“It is unfortunate that a total of 11 students sustained injuries during the riot. I personally took responsibility to ensure that they were promptly attended to and received medical care at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH). I will continue to monitor their recovery and ensure they get the support they need.
“As your Member of Parliament, I remain committed to promoting discipline, dialogue, and safety in all schools within our constituency. Let us all work together to uphold the dignity and purpose of education,” he further said.
