Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko acquitted in a 2019 assault case by the Kiambu Court on Monday

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko acquitted in a 2019 assault case by the Kiambu Court on Monday.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has walked escort free after a Kiambu Court dropped assault charges.

The case stemmed from accusations that Sonko had gained forcible entry into a property in Buruburu Phase Four, Nairobi when he was the county boss.

The court dropped the charges following the withdrawal of the accusations by the complainants.

The former Nairobi Governor had been charged with various counts of assault and forcible entry of property in Buruburu Phase Four.

According to Court documents the incident happened on May 25, 2019, when Sonko was accused of leading a group of men into raiding a property in Buruburu and assaulted Evans Obaga.

The Court heard that Sonko caused bodily harm to the complainant.

Appearing in court, Sonko denied the charges and he was released on a Ksh300,000 bond.

However, on Monday, March 11, the prosecutor notified the court that they did not object to the complainants’ application to withdraw the case.

Following the latest developments, Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Ooko marked the case as closed.

“From complaint number one all the way to number 10, the application to have the matter withdrawn reasons advance which has not been opposed, I allow the same as prayed. I have also discharged the accused’s surety,” Ooko ordered.

“The matter is marked as closed,” he ruled further.

This comes days after Sonko was acquitted in the Ksh357 million graft case. The former Governor was accused of misappropriation of funds amounting to Ksh357 million belonging to the Nairobi county government.

But on February 7, 2024, Milimani Magistrate Eunice Nyutu acquitted Sonko indicating that no evidence had been adduced by the prosecution to show they conspired to embezzle the said funds.

“After carefully considering the testimony of six witnesses, the evidence adduced is inadequate to sustain the charges leveled against the accused persons,” Nyutu said.
