Ministry of Education issues directive to all first years with university fee challenge

All first years will be admitted with or without university fees according to a statement by Education Cabinet Secretary

All first years will be admitted with or without university fees according to a statement by Education Cabinet Secretary.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said all students who have obtained admission letters are required to report to their respective universities by Monday of the following week.

Machogu said on Thursday before the National Education Committee that no first year student should be expelled from school due to unpaid fees.

“All students will be admitted as we are processing the funding for first-year students,” Machogu said.

“We will be giving the universities the funds so that they don’t say that we are admitting first-year students without the funds.”

Machogu said they will be writing a circular letter to the universities to allow students to be absorbed in the institutions.

This comes after MPs inquired as to whether students who have not yet received their scholarships or loans or paid their fees will be permitted to enroll in their universities on Monday.

Students don’t need to wait till they earn scholarships or loans, according to Machogu’s response.

Meanwhile, under the new university model, students will be awarded scholarships, loans and bursaries based after a Means Testing Instrument (MTI) methodology that intends to determine their level of need.

The new funding model will disburse funds on the ratio encompassing 61 per cent of Government scholarships, 36 per cent of Government loans and 7 per cent of households.

In the just concluded 2023/2024 academic year KUCCPS placement exercise, 122,831 candidates secured placement to degree courses in universities while 88,724 got placed in TVET institutions.

Of those placed in TVET, 53,726 will be admitted to Diploma,29,112 to Craft Certificate and 5,886 Artisan Certificate courses.
