Missing Athlete Clement Kemboi found dead at High School farm after he allegedly committed suicide.
The Kenyan athletics fraternity has been plunged into mourning for the second time in less than 24 hours following the death of middle-distance runner Clement Kemboi.
Kemboi’s death was confirmed on Monday, October 7, after his body was found in Koisungur, Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The athlete is believed to have died by suicide.
Elgeyo Marakwet Police Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed to the press noting that the athlete’s body was found hanging on a rope tied to a tree near the St Patrick High School farm in Koisungur village.
Kemboi’s body has since been moved to the Iten County Referral Morgue, awaiting a post-mortem.
Specializing in the 3000m steeplechase, Kemboi first showed the world what he was capable of when he won the 2005 Africa Games as a teenager. Six years later, he won his first international circuit at the 2011 Weltklasse in Biberach, running a personal best of 8:34.22 in the 3000m.
Another notable performance from the athlete came in 2015, when he won his first international medal, winning the Africa Games men’s steeplechase aged just 23. In what was a stellar year for him, he was ranked 8th worldwide in the men’s steeplechase and at some point, drew comparisons to his legendary namesake Ezekiel Kemboi.
His personal best time in the 3000m came in 2016 at the Doha Diamond League where he recorded an impressive time of 8:10.65.

Another Kenyan athlete and world champion dies in hospital
Kemboi’s death comes barely hours after Kenyans were coming to terms with the death of another athlete – Kipyegon Bett.
Bett passed away on Sunday, October 6 at the Tenwek Hospital in Bomet County as he received treatment for an unnamed ailment. The 2016 World U20 champion in the 800m was 26 when he died.
Purity Kirui, Bett’s sister, said the athlete had been unwell for over a month and had been admitted to AIC Litein Hospital as an outpatient before his condition worsened.
Just days earlier, retired marathoner Samson Kandie lost his life after an attack near his home in Eldoret.
Kandie was killed by assailants at his home in Elgon View Estate in Uasin Gishu county.
It is believed Kandie’s assailants patiently waited for the 53-year-old at his home, before tying his hands and legs and launching a fatal attack.
Besides his phone, nothing else was missing from his home.
