Police in Nyamira have confirmed that a body exhumed from a shallow grave in Nyamauro Village belongs to a missing medical officer who disappeared last month.

Authorities said the remains, initially recovered from a shallow dugout pit in Nyakenimo Sub-location, were identified as those of Duke Nyang’au Obasancho, a 41-year-old man reported missing.

The identification was carried out by the National Registration Bureau (NRB), marking a breakthrough in the case of a missing person first reported on February 23, 2026.

According to police, the deceased hailed from Manga Sub-county, Kemera Location in Nyamira County.

At the time of his disappearance, he was serving as a Medical Superintendent and Community Health Nursing Officer at Nyamusi Sub-County Hospital. Preliminary findings indicate the body had a penetrating neck wound.

Investigators believe he was killed and secretly buried in the shallow grave. The remains were preserved at Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected.

Police have intensified investigations into the incident, treating it as a suspected murder.

Authorities are working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death and to identify those responsible.

The case has sparked concern among residents and healthcare professionals, given the victim’s role in the local health sector.

The motive for the murder remains unknown, police said. Officers handling the case told journalists on Thursday that while they were pursuing promising leads, no arrests had yet been made.

Meanwhile, a family in Kirinyaga County is mourning the death of a three-year-old boy who drowned in River Murubara in Mwea East Sub-County. The incident was reported on March 23, 2026, after the child went missing earlier that morning at around 9:30 a.m.

He had been left under the care of his grandmother while his parents were away doing casual work. A search was immediately launched, leading to the discovery of the child’s body in the river. An autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to exercise increased vigilance, especially during the ongoing rainy season, as swollen rivers continue to pose a serious risk to children and communities living nearby.
