Moi University issues notice to students over hawking

Uncertainty has engulfed hundreds of hawkers around Moi University after the University administration issued a stern directive banning all forms of hawking within its premises.

In an internal memo dated July 7,  Acting Dean of Students Alice Mutai directed all students not to buy any kind of goods sold by hawkers on the university premises.

While referencing  Article 9.0 (p) of the university’s code of conduct, which explicitly prohibits hawking of any kind, the administration urged the students and hawkers to take the notice seriously.

“Students are hereby notified of Article 9.0 (p) that NO HAWKING OF ANY KIND is allowed within the university premises. The student fraternity is equally asked to refrain from buying unlicensed merchandise.

Take this notice very seriously,” the internal memo read.

Interestingly, hawking around the campus premises is mostly done by students who are looking for a side hustle to finance their stay on campus.

For many of the students, hawking has been more than just a side hustle; it’s been a lifeline, a way to fend for themselves.

Many of them engage in different kinds of hawking, from selling snacks and stationery to offering mobile accessories and second-hand clothes. This kind of informal trade has long been a part of their campus life.

The university administration has maintained that the ban is necessary to uphold order and ensure safety within the institution.

University officials argue that unregulated trade within the premises poses health risks, security concerns, and violates licensing laws.

Meanwhile, the University has warned the newly placed first-year students to be wary of fraudsters who are asking them to pay Ksh100 to get their admission letters.

In an official statement on their Facebook Page, Moi University informed the students that the admission letters were yet to be printed, and all students would get official communication only from the University.

“Moi University does NOT charge any fee to download or receive an admission letter. Official communication is only sent via bulk SMS registered under the sender name Moi-Uni,” the University warned.

“We urge all prospective students and their guardians to be vigilant and to disregard any unofficial messages. For accurate updates, always refer to the official Moi University website and verified social media platforms,” the notice continued.
