In a statement on Monday, November 3, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich said the landslide occurred due to the torrential rains.
Governor Rotich urged residents living in fragile areas along the escarpment to move to higher ground to avoid any further tragedies.
“We have just experienced another landslide at Kibendo in Keiyo North due to the torrential rains, and the unfortunate has happened. The county disaster response team, the office of the Area MP team, and ambulances are already on site.
“We urge all EMC residents who live in fragile areas along the escarpment to move to higher ground. I beg each one of us to listen, it’s extraordinary times and needs each of us to comply to save lives,” said Rotich.
In another update, the Elegeyo Marakwet Governor disclosed that two people were killed in the landslide after a huge rock crashed into the house they were in.
Meanwhile, the injured residents were rushed to the Iten County referral Hospital for medical attention.
“The county Disaster response team, health team, area chief, and residents managed to respond and rushed the injured to Iten County referral Hospital.
“Sadly, we lost two after a huge rockfall crashed into the house they were in. All injured had soft tissue injuries and were reviewed by Doctors at ICRH and just discharged now,” Rotich added.

The incident comes barely two days after a devastating landslide that struck Machember village in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The death toll of the tragedy has risen to 26, with several residents still missing as emergency teams continued their search.
“Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with the death toll now standing at 26 following the recovery of more bodies today. 25 people are still unaccounted for, while 26 are hospitalized,” Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen stated.
CS Murkomen also announced that the government will cover hospital and funeral expenses for the victims of the landslide.
He further outlined a coordinated response involving several ministries to restore essential infrastructure and services in the affected zones.
“My colleagues, the CS for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, is fast-tracking the release of emergency funds to restore roads damaged in the landslide, while his Energy counterpart, Opiyo Wandayi, will deploy a team to restore electricity,” Murkomen explained.
He also revealed that education officials had made alternative plans to ensure national examinations proceed smoothly despite the devastation.
