Mother of Kenyan police officer killed in Haiti speaks
The mother of the Kenyan police officer killed in Haiti, Benedict Kabiru, on Thursday, 27 March, spoke for the first time, demanding clarity from the government on her son’s whereabouts.
According to Kabiru’s mother, who was speaking to NTV, police authorities informed her that her son is missing, seemingly contradicting other reports indicating that Kabiru is dead.
Today, the Presidential Transitional Council (PTC) of Haiti confirmed Kabiru as the police officer, disclosing that he was shot dead on Monday, March 24, 2025, in Savien, while carrying out an anti-gang operation.
According to the transitional council, the officer, who was part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti, was killed during the operation carried out jointly with the Haitian forces.
While mourning him, Haiti’s President, Fritz Alphonse Jean, described Kabiru as a valiant police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for the Caribbean country.
However, Kabiru’s mother claims that information from official sources paints a picture that her son has disappeared and is not dead.
Nevertheless, she acknowledged seeing reports and even footage suggesting that her son is no more.
“My plea to the government is that they settle this as quickly as possible. Since yesterday at 6:30 am, the report I was getting from the Administration Police Commander in Kikuyu was that my son had disappeared. It has now been more than 24 hours, and I have heard nothing. The internet is saying that my son is dead,” Kabiru’s mother stated.
“My demand to the government is that I want my son the way I left him; alive and well. He is my first-born. I am a single mother, and my son is the only hope for my family,” she added.
Furthermore, Kabiru’s mother cautioned Kenyans against spreading reports of her son’s alleged death, adding that it was causing harm and pain to the family.
“For those saying that Kabiru is dead, please stop. Kabiru is alive. Kabiru will live. Those using the internet to spread those reports should stop,” she expressed.

Kabiru’s mother revealed that since her son went to Haiti in July 2024, she had been in constant communication with him. She further added that they had recently spoken, and Kabiru had informed her that he had been transferred to Central Haiti, a hotspot for gangs.
The death of Kabiru first emerged on Tuesday, March 25, after local media in Haiti reported his demise following a confrontation with the gangs.
During the incident, three armoured vehicles belonging to the peacekeepers were also set on fire by armed gangs, with footage of the scene shared online showing the vehicles engulfed in flames.
Confirming the tragedy, Kenyan Police Spokesperson in Haiti, Jack Ombaka, revealed that the incident occurred after the vehicles got stuck in a ditch, suspected to have been deliberately dug by the gangs.
Kabiru is the second Kenya police officer to be killed in Haiti since Kenyan authorities were sent to the gang-ridden nation.
