MP Kaluma reveals source of major disagreement in ODM party

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma now says that the disagreement in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is majorly on the strategy to capture power

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma now says that the disagreement in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is majorly on the strategy to capture power.

In a statement on Sunday, February 23, Kaluma noted that one faction of the party believes that ODM should join forces with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to remove President William Ruto from power.

“One side believes ODM should enter into a coalition with Gachagua led coalition consisting of Gachagua, Kalonzo, Eugine Wamalwa, Natembeya, and Matiang’i to remove President William Ruto from power and enable Gachagua to have his revenge against Ruto,” read the statement in part.

Kaluma pointed out that the other faction in ODM believes politics is much more than the pursuit of revenge.

He also highlighted that the faction sees Gachagua as a ‘tribalist’ who was removed from office for advocating ethnic and regional exclusion of Kenyans.

“To this group, the ODM party which is founded on social justice, equity, equality, inclusion, the rule of law, and constitutionalism will associate with President Ruto but not Gachagua,” said Kaluma.

The ODM MP mentioned that each of the two factions in the party is doing all it can to have Raila Odinga on their side.

“No doubt, each side is doing all it can to pull Prime Minister Raila Odinga to its side,” the Homa Bay Town MP stated.

However, Kaluma observed that all ODM members agree that the party must be strong and must field candidates, including presidential candidates, in all future elections.

Further, he said that ODM members agree that no single party can win elections alone and that forming coalitions is necessary for electoral success.
