MPs lack moral authority to impeach Gachagua; Kalonzo

Kalonzo faults MPs for impeaching DP Gachagua adding that they lack moral authority to do so.
Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called out the 281 Members of Parliament who voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying they were used by the executive as a lynchpin against the DP.
Kalonzo said he was appalled by the way the National Assembly hastily impeached Gachagua, saying the deputy president is being used as a smokescreen by the Kenya Kwanza administration to cover its shortcomings.
“I was impressed by the 44 MPs who refused to be used and stood firm for the truth. By the way I was also very impressed by Gachagua’s presentation in his own defense,” Kalonzo said.
He defended the Deputy President against the impeachment, saying the current National Assembly is illegitimate as it was impeached by the Kenyan people during the June 26 Gen Z protests.

“Some of us hold the view that this Parliament was impeached by the Kenyan people on June 25, so they lack the moral authority to adjudicate on such matters of national importance,” Kalonzo added.
On the said date, youthful Kenyan protesters stormed parliament after MPs defiantly voted for the now-dropped Finance Bill 2024. Police shoot dead protesters outside parliament buildings.
Last week 281 MPs voted to remove Gachagua from office by impeachment, over a myriad of allegations, including gross misconduct and violation of the constitution.
The DP’s fate lies with the Senate and indeed the judiciary, where he hopes he will be cleared of any wrongdoing.
