Mt Kenya MP calls on DP Gachagua to join Kalonzo and Natembeya ahead of 2027 elections

Senator Mathu urges DP Gachagua to join forces with Kalonzo and Natembeya amid the fallout with President Ruto

Senator Mathu urges DP Gachagua to join forces with Kalonzo and Natembeya amid the fallout with President Ruto.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is being advised to rethink his political strategy as the pressure around him escalates, with calls for an alliance that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape.

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has urged Gachagua to consider partnering with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and other like-minded leaders, as he seeks to consolidate his political capital.

Methu’s proposal is not without reason. The inclusion of key allies of Raila Odinga in President William Ruto’s Cabinet has sent ripples through the political fabric, leaving several leaders in a precarious position.

With Odinga’s decision to support Ruto, figures like Kalonzo Musyoka, who once harboured significant political aspirations, now find themselves sidelined, while others, such as Natembeya, are emerging as alternatives to established figures like Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Methu’s call to action is a clear sign of the shifting political alliances in Kenya.

He believes that by forming strategic partnerships, Gachagua could not only solidify his support base but also secure his political future in an increasingly volatile environment.

The Senator, speaking on Wednesday, August 20, stressed the importance of adopting a broad-based approach, similar to President Ruto’s strategy of including opposition figures in his government.

However, Methu’s suggestion is laced with caution. He warned Gachagua against maintaining a hardline stance against opposition parties, arguing that this could alienate potential allies.

“I want to plead with you to dismantle the ‘traps’ we had placed against the opposition, as they could potentially ensnare our friends. Use this opportunity to build new relationships, regardless of their political strength,” Methu advised.

The Senator’s remarks also included a pointed exclusion. Methu advised Gachagua to steer clear of Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, whom he dismissed as having “no significant backing.” This reflects the ongoing political calculations that are shaping the future of alliances in Kenya.

Methu’s comments recall Gachagua’s own words from February last year, when he declared that he had set “traps” at State House to block opposition leader Raila Odinga. At the time, Gachagua was adamant about protecting President Ruto from any attempts by Odinga to join the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Leave the job of guarding the President to me,” Gachagua had stated confidently. “If anyone tries to approach State House, I have set traps on every possible path they could take.”

But the political landscape has since shifted dramatically. President Ruto’s recent Cabinet reshuffle, which saw the appointment of four senior ODM members, has sparked discontent within the opposition. The move led to the withdrawal of Narc-Kenya and DAP-Kenya from the Azimio Coalition, citing betrayal and realignment.

Despite the backlash, President Ruto has stood by his decision, arguing that these appointments will “turbocharge” Kenya’s development. During a recent tour of the Kisii region, Ruto called on leaders to put aside personal interests and focus on uniting the country.

“I am asking those leaders who are yet to turn around and believe in the value of unity to join us in this greater calling,” Ruto stated, urging for a collective effort to develop the nation.
