Mudavadi tells off Uhuru over party democracy as leaders clash at Jirongo burial
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has hit back at retired President Uhuru Kenyatta over his remarks on the protection of political parties, accusing him of hypocrisy.
Mudavadi said Uhuru cannot credibly speak about safeguarding multiparty democracy when, during his tenure as Jubilee Party leader, he oversaw the dissolution of at least 12 political parties, including UDF, TNA and URP, into Jubilee between 2015 and 2016.
He further took on Uhuru, claiming he forced some parties to align with the Azimio coalition ahead of the 2022 General Election, arguing that such actions contradicted his current stance.
“It is dishonest for the former President to lecture the country on protecting political parties when his record shows the opposite,” Mudavadi said.
The PCS was responding to comments made by Uhuru during the funeral of veteran politician and businessman Cyrus Jirongo in Kakamega County.
At the ceremony, Uhuru criticised leaders he accused of meddling in the internal affairs of other political parties and called for cooperation and unity to strengthen national cohesion.
Uhuru praised the late Jirongo as a staunch defender of multiparty democracy and a political heavyweight, saying he possessed the stature and capacity to become President.
“If there was a person who truly respected and upheld multiparty democracy, then it was Cyrus Jirongo,” Kenyatta said.

Mudavadi echoed the praise for Jirongo, describing him as a principled defender of multiparty politics whose political influence and vision set him apart from many of his peers.
In a separate response to Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Mudavadi defended his call for a referendum, saying it was anchored in honouring the 10-point agenda under the broad-based government arrangement.
He challenged Sifuna to support the referendum if he was genuine about reforms and national interest.
“If Sifuna is sincere, then he should support the referendum because it is part of what the broad-based government agreed on,” Mudavadi said.
During his address, Uhuru warned political actors against blame-shifting and divisive rhetoric, urging them to engage directly with voters and articulate clear policy agendas.
“When someone fails to win acceptance, they start looking for someone to blame. Get rid of that mindset, go speak directly to the people, form and build your own party with clear policies like Cyrus Jirongo did,” Uhuru said.
