Haiti gang leader, Barbecue affirms that its men are ready to fight the mission led by Kenya ahead of police deployment.

In an interview this week on NPR, a broadcasting and public service network in the USA, Jimmy Chérizier aka “Babecue”, head of the “G9” coalition, and leader of the alliance of the two largest gang coalitions in Haiti “G9” and “G pèp” better known as “Viv Ansanm”, suggested that the members of the alliance are ready to confront non-UN forces (but authorized by the UN.

Jimmy Chérizier said the gangs are preparing for a long fight, expecting a lot of blood to be shed before international force.

Asked about his chances of survival, “Barbecue”, convinced of being a liberating revolutionary, declared “My life depends on God and my ancestors. If Jean-Jacques Dessalines had worried about his life, Haiti would not be free today.”

His comments come after a large number of heavily armed gang members marched in the streets of the capital against the arrival of the Multinational Mission.

In the midst of the demonstrations, gang leaders put pressure on their members not to flee to the provinces before the arrival of international forces.

Kenya and Haiti, with the support of the United Nations and the United States, entered into an agreement that will see the East African nation send up 1,000 police officers for a security mission in the Caribbean nation.

However, the process has faced hurdles both legal and political in the country, although President William Ruto’s government is determined to honours its side of the bargain and deploy security officials.

Meanwhile, approximately 200 Kenyan police officers will be deployed to Haiti next week as part of the UN Security Council-backed security mission to Port-au-Prince.

According to the Nation newspaper, the officers, drawn from the elite Recce squad, Rapid Deployment Force, and Special Operation Group, will touch down in Port-au-Prince around May 23 or 24, to align with President William Ruto’s official visit to the United States.
