My son is innocent, he's only being set up; Mackenzie’s mother speaks

Mackenzie’s mother insists her son is innocent claiming that he's being set up by his former followers

Mackenzie’s mother insists her son is innocent claiming that he’s being set up by his former followers.

Anastasia Mwele, the mother to controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie, on Friday, April 28, defended her son, arguing that he was not a killer.

Speaking to the press, the embattled mother noted that her son stopped preaching in 2019 when he closed down his church.

She says her son is only being set up by his former followers.

“I am surprised by the accusations levelled against my fifth born. Why am I not starving like his mother? Why am I not dead?” she asked.

“If he killed those people, let me not wake up tomorrow. Let me go to hell. Anyway, that is the way of the world. It chooses what it wants from you and mercilessly discards the rest. My son remains innocent.”

Anastacia said she had a close relationship with her son, “who was obedient and very generous with the little he had”.

The last time mother and son had a conversation was in March when he appeared in court on suspicion of being involved in the death of two children.

Anastacia insists her son is innocent.

“We believe in Jesus Christ. He is our only hope. In fact, Paul was found innocent on some of the charges he had been arraigned for,” she said.

“Even this one will pass. Our Jesus will hear our cry and be on our side as he has always been.”

On the other hand, his brother argued that some of the bodies retrieved from the Shakahola forest may have been buried a long time ago and were not linked to the pastor. Autopsies, he added, may reveal the truth behind the incident.

However, the family affirmed that Mackenzie was a friend of Pastor Ezekiel Odero, also linked to multiple deaths at his church.

They noted that the duo engaged when Mackezie sold his TV station (Times TV) to Ezekiel in 2019. According to police reports, Mackenzie sold the station for Ksh500,000. However, police traced Ksh3 million transactions between the two, days after Ezekiel was arrested.

“I have seen pastor Ezekiel once when he came to buy the TV station from my brother,” the brother explained.

He added that his brother has been generous from the days of their childhood.

“He is very generous. He took me to primary and secondary school. Paul has helped many people in Furunzi where he started the Good News International Church. I still cannot fathom these accusations against him,” Mbatha said.
