NCIC goes after Rigathi Gachagua over 2007/08 remarks
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in which he allegedly likened the 2007/08 post-election violence to a ‘Christmas party.’
In a statement on Wednesday, May 21, the commission termed the comments as dangerously insensitive, warning that it risks undermining years of national healing and peacebuilding.
“We are concerned by Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, Former Deputy President, recent remarks, in which he referred to the 2007/2008 post-election violence as a ‘Christmas party.’
“Certainly, these thoughts are not only appalling but dangerously insensitive to the pain, loss, and trauma suffered by thousands of Kenyans during one of the darkest chapters in our history,” the statement read.
NCIC emphasized the gravity of the events that unfolded during the period, and warned against trivializing the tragedy.
“Let it be made clear: there is nothing festive about the deaths, displacement, and devastation that marked that period. To trivialize such a profound national tragedy is to dishonour the memory of the victims and the resilience of the survivors,” the statement added.
NCIC noted that it is working with other agencies to hold Gachagua responsible for the remarks.

“The Commission is working closely with other relevant agencies to hold Hon. Rigathi Gachagua responsible for these reckless utterances,” the statement concluded.
Speaking during an interview with Oga Obinna at his Wamunyoro residence, Gachagua warned that the country will destabilize should the 2027 elections be rigged.
“With the mood in the country, if that IEBC tries to mess with the elections, there will be no country here, I want to tell you that 2007 will look like a Christmas party,” he said.
The remarks sparked widespread condemnation from the political class, particularly those aligned with President William Ruto, forcing Gachagua to clarify his remarks.
“They are trying to change the context of what I said. I never said there would be unrest. All I said is I listened to Kenyans, and they are saying the President and IEBC should not rig elections,” he explained.
