Ndiang'ui Kinyagia summoned to DCI headquarters after reappearance from 'hiding'
The National Police Service (NPS) has summoned blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia to present himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters to record a statement, following his unexpected reappearance from what was widely reported as a mysterious disappearance.
Kinyagia, who appeared in court on Thursday, had previously been reported missing under circumstances that sparked public outcry. Social media platforms and sections of the mainstream media accused the police of abducting him — claims the NPS has now dismissed as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NPS reiterated that Kinyagia was never in their custody, and termed the allegations as part of a worrying trend where individuals “feign abduction and provide false information” in an apparent effort to stir public outrage and misrepresent facts.
“The Service reiterates its earlier response that Ndiangui Kinyagia was not in police custody. We take great exception to the emerging trend whereby individuals feign abduction and provide false information to the police, intending to generate a misleading narrative that exploits public outrage and sensational headlines,” the statement read in part.

Police now want Kinyagia to report to the DCI and assist with ongoing investigations, saying that “he remains a person of interest to the police.”
The NPS further warned that stage-managing abductions and issuing false reports are criminal offences, punishable under the law.
“These criminal acts undermine the integrity of our law enforcement efforts, damage the reputation of the National Police Service, and cause anxiety to the public,” the statement added.
Ndiang’ui who went missing from his house in Kinoo, Kiambu County on June 22, showed up in a Nairobi court on Thursday after weeks of speculation and uproar about his whereabouts.
Lawyer Wahome Thuku representing Ndiang’ui’s family told the court that the blogger “had hidden temporarily for fear of his life upon learning that DCI officers were looking for him over unknown criminal allegations.” He added that the blogger contacted a family member on Tuesday evening from an undisclosed location.
“Ndiangui has indicated that he is ready and willing to present himself to the DCI and to be presented before any court of law when his safety and security are guaranteed. We have therefore advised him to present himself before the High Court at Milimani Law Courts today,” Thuku said.
