Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has officially joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The seasoned lawyer actualised this bid on Wednesday, February 4, after being pictured with Rigathi Gachagua in his party offices in Lavington, Nairobi, wearing the DCP Party regalia.

In a statement, Rigathi Gachagua expressed delight as he described as a formidable legal mind within the party’s ranks, noting that Havi’s inclusion strengthens the party’s capacity for oversight and accountability, and describing the outfit as a political home for progressive professionals seeking leadership.

“DCP party requires great legal minds for legislation, representation, and oversight. I am happy to welcome Nelson Havi SC, one of the greatest legal minds in the country to walk with us in his quest to represent the people of Westlands constituency in the National Assembly,” stated Gchagua.

Havi first signalled his shift during the burial of MP James Gakuya’s mother in Murang’a County on Saturday, January 3, 2026. His move comes just five months after resigning from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party he had joined in 2021.

During the burial, the lawyer expressed unwavering loyalty to Gachagua, hinting at a political reunion that could reshape Nairobi’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections in Kenya.

“When we were in the quest of putting the current government in power, MP Gakuya was our chairman,” Havi stated at the emotional Saturday burial ceremony.

He further declared that whenever the former Deputy President charts a course, they will follow, underscoring his allegiance to Gachagua’s new political outfit.

Havi resigned from UDA on November 7, 2024, through a letter addressed to Secretary General Hassan Omar and copied to Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou.

In his resignation letter, Havi invoked Section 14 of The Political Parties Act, Cap 7D of the Laws of Kenya, but did not disclose reasons.

The former LSK boss had joined UDA in 2021 after being welcomed by then-Deputy President William Ruto, but lost the Westlands parliamentary seat in 2022.

Havi is now setting his sights on vying for the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections, potentially benefiting from a vacancy in the constituency.

Current Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi of ODM is reportedly planning to vie for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, potentially leaving the constituency open for new contenders like Havi.

Havi’s move to DCP could significantly strengthen Gachagua’s political influence in Nairobi County ahead of the next polls, observers say, boosting DCP’s parliamentary ambitions.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who serves as ODM Secretary General, was also in attendance at the Murang’a burial where Havi made his political declaration.
