Nelson Havi reveals his monthly salary serving in government after Miguna attack

Lawyer Nelson Havi has revealed that he does not benefit from the government despite his role as the chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) board of directors.

The former president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) was responding to his critics, who asserted that he forewent his activism against bad governance to continue earning a living in government.

To quash the belief that he heftily earns from the state for chaining the RBA board, the lawyer said he is only compensated with a meagre honorarium.

He added that the compensation is also taxed, leaving him with a paltry amount.

Havi suggested he serves the country and offers his services akin to free of charge.

“Let me also school Miguna Miguna, Akech Migai and their ilk on the nonsense that I am a beneficiary of this Government. I am not. The Government is the beneficiary. As Chair, I receive an honorarium of Ksh 80,000, which is taxed to Kshs 50,000. I serve gratuitously and not beneficially,” he said.

Havi was appointed to the post in February 2023; he is to hold it until 2026.

Prior to his appointment in government, the lawyer unsuccessfully contested for the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election.

Havi has been under criticism from some quarters who accuse him of becoming lukewarm on the supposed misdeeds of the current regime.

Fellow lawyer Miguna Miguna had asked him to give up his post and embark on calling out the government when it failed.

With no sign of resigning in sight, Havi defended himself, saying that his conscience and abhorrence of maladministration had never changed.

He said he could still criticise the government while inside it.
