Nelson Havi, a former president of the Kenyan Law Society, has made a nomination for the job of Solicitor General (SG).

Havi was among the eight shortlisted candidates in a list published by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The PSC is looking to replace Ken Ogeto, who has served as the nation’s SG since Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him in 2018.

Shortlisted candidates

Among those shortlisted include 2022 Kilifi gubernatorial candidate George Kithi, and Ruto’s ally Mary Karen Kigen.

Others are Beatrice Adhiambo Akuno, Paul Lilan, Beatrice Mugeni Meso, Shadrack Mose, and Stephen Ochieng Mallowah

Beatrice Mugeni Meso, a former Kenya Power General Manager, Corporate Affairs and Company Secretary between 2014-2019 is also among those shortlisted for the position

Nelson Havi is a member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party legal team and vied for the Westlands Parliamentary seat in the August General Election but lost to Tim Wanyonyi of ODM.

The position of Solicitor General is currently held by Kennedy Ogeto who was appointed during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s era.

In changes made during the Jubilee administration, Mr. Ogeto succeeded Njee Muturi, who was then promoted to the position of State House Deputy Chief of Staff.

According to the law, the solicitor general has a five-year tenure with the option of extension. Thus, Mr. Ogeto’s term will end in March 2023.

President Ruto will submit the name of the chosen candidate to the National Assembly for review and approval following the PSC interviews scheduled for December 13 and 14.

According to the Office of the Attorney General (AG) Act, the Solicitor General will support the AG in carrying out his duties.
