NIS Director no longer picks up my calls, DP Ruto reveals

DP Ruto had revealed that NIS Director no longer picks up his calls after President Uhuru Kenyatta blocked him from attending National Security Council meetings.

Speaking on KTN News on Thursday, July 7, 2022, UDA presidential candidate William Ruto revealed that President Uhuru Kenyatta blocked him from attending the National Security Council meeting three years ago.

In addition, Ruto added that the Director of the National Intelligence Service no longer picks up his calls.

The National Security Council members include the President, deputy president, defence, foreign affairs and internal security cabinet secretaries, the attorney general, chief of defence forces, and the director of the national intelligence service.

Ruto said he used to ask hard questions relating to extra-judicial killings and the council members were not happy with him.

“These are issues (extra-judicial killings) I have raised with the Director of National Intelligence Service when he could still pick up my phone. I had serious concerns about what has happened in many parts of our country,” he said.

Ruto made the claims while responding to a question by Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director Irungu Houghton on the steps he’ll take to address arbitrary executions.

DP Ruto said that his stand against the issue has come at a great personal cost.

The DP said he will address extra-judicial killings that he said had been rampant during Jubilee’s second term.

“It is something that has troubled me a lot and that is why we have put it in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto, that extra-judicial killing must come to an end. It is illegal, unconstitutional, and offends every principle of the right to life,” the DP stated.
