Nobody wants to overthrow your government – Gachagua to Ruto

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has responded to claims by President William Ruto that there are plans to overthrow the government using a spate of demonstrations across the country.

Gachagua, during a press conference on Wednesday, July 8, dismissed Ruto’s earlier claims, insisting that the opposition was intent on taking down the President through the ballot.

“We want to tell you that the Wantam movement is not getting you out of power outside the constitution. No one wants to overthrow your government. I and the people we work with are on record saying we want to remove you from the State House via the Ballot,” Gachagua clarified.

Earlier on Wednesday, President Ruto went on an untamed tirade during the launch of the Police Housing Project at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi as he faulted unnamed individuals over a string of protests that have been witnessed since June.

The Head of State, visibly agitated, accused a section of political leaders of sponsoring chaos and protests across the country in recent weeks, warning that the government would no longer tolerate attempts to destabilise the nation.

“I have been quiet, and I have tolerated these people who want to change the government using unconstitutional means—but enough is enough,” Ruto stated. “We will not allow it. We are coming for you,” he added. “Those plotting to remove me from office before 2027 must know we will not let them destroy this country through unconstitutional means.”

But in a direct rejoinder to the President, Gachagua accused the Head of State of pushing a narrative that there were plans to power grab, to justify the use of excessive force on specific elements.

Gachagua went on, “This narrative you are creating that there is an attempt to overthrow the government is for you to have the opportunity to use the terrorism act to profile communities and to persecute leaders opposed to your administration.”

The former DP also directly addressed the latest wave of protests witnessed on July 7, when the country typically marks Saba Saba Day.

According to Gachagua, the destruction of property in various parts of the country was state-sponsored in what he described as an economic sabotage attempt.

He further faulted the President for allegedly working with governors and Members of Parliament to wreak havoc by destroying businesses, then blaming it on leaders who don’t support his administration.

In another jibe at the President over the Head of State’s earlier rant on Wednesday, Gachagua appeared to suggest Ruto was the victim of his own failed promises to his electorate.

“I saw the president wailing in anger this morning. Mr President, wailing in anger is not the solution. The people of Kenya are angrier than you are,” Gachagua went on.

“Give hustlers the jobs you promised them. You cannot say other presidents have not been able to do it. You are the one who promised. “
