New petition filed to impeach Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza for a third time after surviving an impeachment motion at the Senate
New petition filed to impeach Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza for a third time after surviving an impeachment motion at the Senate.
The Meru County Assembly has received a new petition that aims to remove Governor Kawira Mwangaza from office for a third time.
Governor Mwangaza is accused of flagrant misbehavior, abuse of power, breaking several national and county laws, and flagrant violations of the Constitution, according to a petition submitted by Mitunguu MCA Evans Mawira.
“The discreditable acts have exposed the Office of the Governor, the Office of the Deputy Governor, the Assembly and its leadership, and the people of Meru County to national shame, scandal, embarrassment, ridicule, and disgrace.” the petition read in part.
In a another bid to oust the governor, Meru activist, Michael Kibutha on on Wednesday filed a petition at the High Court of Kenya seeking to remove Kawira Mwangaza from office.
According to the petitioner, the specific day that Mwangaza was impeached was not gazetted, which he claimed contravened the constitution.
Kibutha in his petition further accused Senate Speaker Amason Kingi of failing to assess the evidence presented by the Meru County Assembly.

In his petition, Kibutha urged the court to quash the Senate’s decision.
“That this honorable court be pleased to issue any other order or relief as it may deem fit and just to ensure that law, order and constitutionality is observed,” Kibutha noted.
According to Kibutha, the accusations leveled against the Governor were substantiated.
“Despite the allegations of gross constitutional violations, impeachment was not in accordance with the legal and constitutional obligations vested in the 5th Respondent and was inconsistent with principles of constitutional governance and the rule of law,” read part of the petition.
The petition comes days after Governor Mwangaza survived the second impeachment motion after the Senate dismissed seven charges that were leveled against her by Meru MCAs.
Mwangaza in December 2022 also survived another impeachment after an 11-member Senate Committee cleared the governor of charges levelled against her.
