Four passport brokers who solicit bribes arrested during a security operation conducted at Nyayo House.
Four individuals have been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation-Immigration in what appears to be a crackdown on corrupt officials at the immigration department.
Josphat Khamandi Manyonyi, Howard Tsimbagi alias Button, Ahmed Ibrahim Sheikh, and Hassan Mohamed Hosman were among those arrested, according to a source at Nyayo House.
Investigations into the murky goings-on at Nyayo House have shown that Immigrations staffers have been asking for bribes for a quite long, igniting uproar and destroying Nyayo House’s reputation.
The suspects were detained at the Central Police station following their arrests on Friday, August 25, pending their arraignment for the crimes of preparation to commit a felony and conspiracy to defraud members of the public.
The arrests come after a crackdown declared by Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Interior, who described the Nyayo House as a “crime scene” and pledged to clear it up permanently.
“I will clean up Nyayo house once & for all,” CS Kithure told the committee, “We will seal off Nyayo house & name it a scene of crime. How do Kenyans cue from 6AM? It won’t be business as usual. We must clean up Nyayo house,” CS Kindiki told the National Assembly.
According to the CS, some of Kenya’s ongoing problems, such as insecurity and terrorism, can be traced back to corruption at Nyayo House.

According to the CS, the passport backlog—a pain point for most Kenyans—currently stands at 58,000, with the Department of Immigration and Citizen Services processing approximately 5,000 passports daily.
He stated that plans are in the works to issue passports in 7 days and that the issuance time will be reduced to 3 days in the future, and 24 hours in the event of an emergency.
On Monday, Director-General of Immigration Evelyn Cheluget called a staff meeting of personnel at Nyayo House to discuss the backlog of passport applications.
During the high-level meeting, Evelyn Cheluget warned all personnel at the Directorate of Immigration who have been assisting Kenyans in obtaining passports through unethical ways.
She said that going ahead, the department will retaliate against any corrupt immigration department employees with punitive measures.
