Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has been elected to chair the Senate Standing Committee on Energy.
Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga was on Thursday unanimously elected as the chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy.
Oburu was elected to the position on Thursday, February 20.
“Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga has been elected unanimously as the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy,” the Senate announced.
Senator Oburu will be deputized by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kipkemoi Kisang.
The Senate Standing Committee on Energy is tasked with considering all matters related to fossil fuels exploration, development, production, maintenance, and regulation of energy.
Members of the committee include; Danson Buya Mungatana, Mohamed Abass Sheikh, Boni Khalwale, Olekina Ledama, Ekomwa James Lomenen, and Edwin Sifuna.
The committee handles matters related to fossil fuel exploration, development, production, maintenance and regulation of energy in the country. It was previously chaired by Nyeri Senator Wamatinga Wahome.
This will see Oginga steer the committee in considering matters concerning the operation of the Ministry of Energy headed by Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
This comes days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s allies were de-whipped from various lucrative Senate committees.

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu was axed from the Senate Education Committee while Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa who was holding the position of Roads and Transport Committee chairperson was removed from the position.
Kirinyaga Senator James Murango was kicked out as the Agriculture Committee Chair and Nyandarua Senator John Methu was axed from the Environment and Natural Resources Committee where he served as the chairman.
Also removed from the committees are Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, and Lenku Seki of Kajiado.
The roles are set to be rewarded to allies of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in a move to cement the broad-based government political deal between Odinga and President William Ruto.
