Oburu Oginga condemns teargas incident at Sifuna’s Kitengela rally
Oburu Oginga has criticised last weekend’s teargas incident in Kitengela during embattled ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna’s rally.
ODM Party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has criticised last weekend’s teargas incident in Kitengela during embattled ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna’s rally.
Oburu called for a thorough police investigation and accountability for those responsible, saying the incident was against the Constitution.
While addressing the Senate on Wednesday, Oburu said there is a need for restraint and adherence to the rule of law, noting that such incidents risk undermining ongoing political and governance commitments.
“I did not like what happened last weekend in Kitengela when people were teargassed in a rally. I hope police will investigate it thoroughly and the culprits will be punished accordingly because we are in the implementation of the 10-point agenda,” Oburu said.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Wananchi movement held a rally in Kitengela, which ended abruptly after teargas was lobbed into the crowd.
Crowds gathered as leaders addressed them, with chants of “One Term” heard during the rally.

“Thank you, Kitengela. In spite of all the harassment, intimidation, and violence from this morning, you showed up. They first destroyed our dais and sound equipment in the morning.
The state goons have now teargassed a peaceful assembly and brought it to an abrupt end. We shall not relent,” Sifuna said after the disruption.
The Kitengela meeting came a week after his inaugural rally in Busia, which also attracted large crowds. The Nairobi Senator said the turnout was encouraging.
“Kenyans have given me comfort in knowing that even if they do away with Sifuna, another 15 million Sifunas will emerge to continue the mission,” he said.
Sifuna, who was removed as ODM Secretary General before the Political Parties Tribunal reinstated him, has differed with his party leader, Oburu Oginga, and is leading a faction within the party.
“They may have the party, but we have the members,” Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said, referring to the Linda Wananchi team.
The two sides have differed on the future of ODM following Raila Odinga’s death.
