ODM MP explains source of empowerment forums money

Uriri MP Mark Nyamita has moved to clarify the source of money used in the increasingly popular empowerment forums.
Uriri MP Mark Nyamita has moved to clarify the source of money used in the increasingly popular empowerment forums.
Speaking on Thursday, August 21, Nyamita explained that the initiative is a coordinated support system among MPs, where they contribute to each other’s events.
“The empowerment programme is a merry-go-round among MPs, where we go to support each other in our constituencies. I have personally attended 18 empowerment forums, and those 18 colleagues also owe me a visit. In such forums, we might raise about Ksh5 million from colleagues, but not from corruption,” he said.
Nyamita’s statement came in response to DCP Party deputy leader Cleophas Malala who alleged that MPs were given the money by people within the Executive.
“When MPs attend empowerment programmes, they are given Ksh300,000. Out of that, they keep Ksh200,000 for themselves and only contribute Ksh100,000. I have seen MP Mark Nyamita being given money by Farouk [Kibet],” he claimed.
Elsewhere, Nyamita responded to claims of bribery in Parliament, describing the allegations as concerning and hoped that action would be taken.
“The institution of Parliament is a very serious one, and for it to become a den of corruption or even to be perceived as such is a grave concern.
“During the PG, both President Ruto and Raila Odinga were bold on this matter of corruption, and the President has only brought this very serious discussion that people have always had behind the scenes. I hope it will not stop at the level of statements, but will be followed by concrete action,” he added.

Speaking during the Kenya Kwanza-ODM Parliamentary Group meeting on Monday, August 18, Ruto accused senators of turning oversight proceedings into a marketplace, alleging that governors seeking to defend themselves often had to pay bribes.
He referred to instances of Ksh150 million being demanded during Senate sessions where governors appeared for grilling or impeachment.
“I am a consumer of raw intelligence every day. In the Senate, when a governor appears for grilling or impeachment, the chambers are nicknamed soko huru. Where does one even get Ksh150 million? Isn’t that money meant for counties?” he asked.
Ruto also spoke of alleged corruption at the National Assembly, announcing that MPs involved in soliciting and receiving bribes will be arrested.
He went on to reveal that some lawmakers received a Ksh10 million bribe to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill.
“Did you know that a few members of parliament collected Ksh10 million so that you could pass the Anti-Money laundering bill. Did you get the money?” he posed.
