Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo has announced plans to take legal action against former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i over alleged extrajudicial killings during the Jubilee administration.

The legislator revealed that he is finalizing a petition seeking to bar Dr. Matiang’i from contesting for the presidency, holding him responsible for what he termed as state-sanctioned atrocities — particularly the dumping of bodies in River Yala.

“As MP for Gem, I had a meeting with lawyers last night having listened to the statement of Matiang’i confirming that a number of Kenyans who were butchered were thrown in River Yala, we are going to petition court so that we can hold him culpable as an individual for having thrown bodies in River Yala so that he can be accountable as a former holder of Interior office,” said the MP.

Odhiambo accused the former Interior CS of overseeing a reign of terror that led to environmental and humanitarian devastation in parts of Gem constituency. He claimed that numerous bodies were discovered dumped in River Yala during Matiang’i’s tenure, branding the incident as “environmental terrorism” and a stain on the community’s well-being.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, Matiang’i said he escalated the River Yala bodies matter to then- Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, who maintained that they needed the families to positively identify the bodies to uncover the truth.

He was accompanied by Makadara MP George Aladwa and Luanda MP Dick Maungu during the press briefing. The two lawmakers echoed his sentiments and further warned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against making inflammatory statements targeting Kenya’s security institutions — specifically the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the National Police Service (NPS).

They criticized Gachagua’s camp for what they described as reckless political rhetoric aimed at destabilizing the country and sowing seeds of ethnic division.

“…impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has become nothing short of a high priest of hate. He has established aschool of division at Wamunyoro, where he is training a new generation of MPs in the dark arts of tribal politics,” said the MP.

The trio urged political leaders to exercise restraint and prioritize national cohesion over political gain, emphasizing that undermining key state institutions poses a grave threat to Kenya’s stability.
